Keeping close track of what reagents your lab has in stock is a critical, if not entirely glamorous, task. For the Ewing biotech and custom QC lab of MilliporeSigma/Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, which has nearly 2,500 items in stock, safety requirements and ISO14385 certifications demanded they review their inventory for expired reagents every month, one by one.

With three separate inventory locations organized by temperature—a freezer, a cooler, and a room temperature storage area—it would take two analysts per location approximately 2-3 hours to review the expiration dates on every label. The combined process would take a minimum of six hours to complete using manual methods; time that could be better spent doing more high-value research work.

By digitizing their inventory with BrightLab, the Ewing lab was able to reduce the time needed for monthly reviews down to mere minutes—resulting in a time savings of nearly 96 percent! This not only provided the team with more accurate, up-to-date information, it also reduced lab waste and freed up their researchers to do more valuable work.
