Lab Inventory Management

BrightLab’s Inventory Management module optimizes inventory workflow, accelerates material lifecycle tracking, reduces lab waste and streamlines material requests and ordering. BrightLab’s collaborative lab inventory management automates the location, consumption, and reordering of materials with a single tool.

Product applies to all items in a similar group, and materials apply specifically to individual instances in a product.

Items can be added to the inventory using the Add Inventory blue tab on the top right of the inventory landing page. Individual items can be added by filling out required product or material fields. All fields with an asterisk are required to be filled.

Catalog number is the product number excluding pack size extension.

CAS Number is a unique numerical identifier assigned by the Chemical Abstract Service (CAS) to every chemical substance described in the open scientific literature including organic and inorganic compounds, minerals, isotopes, alloys and non-structural materials.

SKU is the catalog number plus any pack size extension.

To batch upload products into inventory, follow the steps below:

  1. Click on “Add Inventory” to get started.
  2. Select the option to Add multiple items. If you do not have an inventory file, click on “Download Template” to download our template” in .xlsx format.
  3. Please fill the mandatory fields marked with an *. For expected data formats & attribute descriptions, please refer to header comments. If you enter ‘Sigma-Aldrich’ as the Manufacturer and a Sigma-Aldrich catalog number, we will look up the following fields for you from our database: (Name, CAS #, Boiling Point, Melting Point, Flashing Point, & GHS information).
  4. Enter your material details into the appropriate columns—be sure to double-check for accuracy before saving!
  5. Drag and drop your saved file into BrightLab to upload your complete list of lab inventory. Note: If you already have an existing file, use the “drag and drop” option to upload your file.
  6. Click on “Add” when finished.

If the batch upload fails, an email with instructions will be sent to fix the fields with error. Fields marked with an asterisk are required to be filled. Once the error(s) are fixed, the template can be re-uploaded.

To update materials in inventory, first click on the material to view material details. Next, update the material information. Finally, click on “Save” to add the updates.

Yes, when you click on a material, you can also view and update the product tab. However, when you click on a product, you can only view and update product details.

You can delete or dispose any item added to inventory. The “Dispose” feature records items in the disposal log, but the “Delete” feature permanently removes the item from the inventory.

Yes, you can find GHS pictogram symbols and hazard descriptions for Sigma-Aldrich catalog products that have been added to BrightLab inventory. To view the GHS information for a product, click the pictogram symbol located next to product name on the inventory landing page.

To view the SDS for Sigma-Aldrich catalog products in the inventory module, click the diamond shaped SDS symbol located next to product name. For products from other vendors, SDS can be uploaded on the product detail page.

You can search and filter for inventory products and materials using the funnel icon located along top right navigation panel.  You can easily search and filter for products running low, expired or out of stock, as well as by type, location, manufacturer and vendor.

Yes, you can download selected materials or the entire inventory as an excel file. To download your inventory, select the product(s) you’d like to download and click the download icon located along the top right navigation panel.

Yes.  Location can be added to a product by using the add location icon located along the top right navigation panel. Locations and sub-locations can be added to provide specific information on where the material is stored/located.

Materials can be requested by using the “Request Materials” icon located along the top navigation panel. To request materials, select the materials and then click on the request materials icon. Once you add, the materials will also appear in the requested tab of the Requests module.

Inventory quantity can be adjusted using a convenient slider option after material consumption. Adjusting the slider and refreshing the page automatically adjusts the material quantity. You can also adjust quantity by clicking the current quantity and adjusting the level after material consumption.
