Start Here: Essential FAQs

BrightLab is smart lab management software that streamlines and centralizes your essential research information—from experiment ideation to data automation. With several interlocking modules, BrightLab includes a collaborative electronic lab notebook (ELN), real-time inventory management, eCommerce, material requests, and benchtop instrument scheduling.

For forward-thinking teams looking to optimize their lab workflows, BrightLab provides the visibility, collaboration, and simplicity that labs need to focus on science, instead of inefficient documentation, data exchanges, ordering and administrative activities.

Unlike paper or standalone electronic lab notebooks, BrightLab is more than a data collection point—it’s an intuitive research hub that connects people, projects, consumables and equipment together so that teams can be more productive and avoid costly errors.

BrightLab is the only lab management system that allows you to design your experiment protocols, schedule your lab equipment, automatically deduct inventory when the experiment is complete, and request new material orders when your stock is running low—all in one place. Plus, you have the option to automate the workflows and data connection between your lab equipment and lab notebook.

We are scientists, designers, academics and entrepreneurs. We have teams in St. Louis, Boston, Bangalore and Shanghai who are continuously working on optimizing BrightLab. As an innovative venture of MilliporeSigma/Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany—a global leader in the life science business—we are dedicated to making research and biotech production simpler, faster and safer.

Yes, if you work in academia you can get free access to BrightLab’s core feature set, including inventory and request management, commerce, electronic lab notebook (ELN) and instrument scheduling modules.  If you work in industry, you can trial BrightLab for free for 30 days.

No, you do not need a credit card to sign up. You can get started for free and decide if BrightLab is the right fit for your lab.

Yes, you can. To close your account, just write an informal email to brightlabsupport@milliporesigma.com.

Absolutely. BrightLab is built on a Google-certified cloud platform with SSL data encryption and hourly backups, so not only will your data be safe, but we will also be able to quickly scale up our service offerings to you as your data needs grow.

Plus, our parent company MilliporeSigma/Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, has been an active partner in the science and technology industries for over 350 years, so you can rest assured that we are planning to stick around. Your research can have long-lasting impacts, and we intend to support you every step of the way.

All of them. Regardless of which manufacturer you choose to source your lab materials from, or even if your lab maintains its own custom materials, you can upload, track, and report on the usage of all the products and materials in your inventory with BrightLab.

Yes, you can. For any item you upload to your inventory in BrightLab, from any manufacturer, you can easily set up a permission workflow for requesting new materials, and to track the approval and receipt of requested materials.

Integrated ordering is also available for all Sigma-Aldrich products, and most EMD Millipore and EMD Serono products.

Yes, of course. Once you sign up for BrightLab, you have the option to affiliate your Sigma-Aldrich account, which will automatically sync up any contractual pricing or shipping deals you already have in place.

Ordering Sigma-Aldrich or EMD Millipore products through BrightLab is the same as ordering through sigmaaldrich.com, but now you will be able to automatically update your inventory list with your received orders, keep track of minimum and maximum product levels, and reorder materials with a single click.

Although the concept of cloud-enabling your everyday benchtop devices to automate data output to your ELN may seem far-fetched, you might be surprised by what our engineers are able to deliver!
